Providing education and awareness to citizens to encourage vigilance and reduce residential crime.

Outside of law enforcement and the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office's patrol of residential areas, the best way to provide citizens with peace of mind and a sense of security is through education and heightened awareness. The Neighborhood Watch Program has proven to be one of the most cost-effective and efficient ways to combat crime. This program involves the Sheriff's Office partnering with citizens to teach them how to recognize suspicious activity in their area. We encourage everyone to get involved in their local Neighborhood Watch Program to contribute to community safety.

As an "observe and report" program, we do not encourage members to approach or question suspicious individuals; instead, we ask them to observe and report any suspicious activity to the Sheriff's Office. This helps us cover more ground, with more eyes on potential criminal activity. The program creates a network of people looking out for each other, effectively reducing crime.

Responsibilities As A Neighborhood Watch Member:

  • Be alert!
  • Know your neighbors and watch out for each other.
  • Report suspicious activities and crimes to the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Get involved and learn how you can make yourself and your community safer.

Kinds Of Activities To Be Aware Of:

  • Someone screaming or shouting for help.
  • Someone looking in windows of houses and parked vehicles.
  • Property being removed from houses where no one is at home or from a closed business.
  • Vehicles moving slowly through the neighborhood or people sitting in parked vehicles near or at a residence.
